Description
Group photo of six Sikh men at the Akali Temple in Victoria, B.C. A newspaper clipping has been taped to the cardstock frame of the photograph. The caption reads "These six men in the Akali Temple, Graham Street, are leaders of a group claiming Kuldeep Bains, a leading member of Victoria's East Indian community, committed a sacrilege against their religion when he suggested Sikhs shave their beards and wear hats. They claim they are true Sikhs because they wear symbols of their religion--the beard, turban, bracelet and sword. They neither smoke nor drink, which is contrary to Sikhism. The bearded "warriors" attended a Sikh meeting in Vancouver over the weekend and ruled that Mr. Bains had insulted Sikhism. Left to right, Bhan Singh, Bhagat Singh, Bachan Singh, Mohinder Singh on dais, Battan Singh and Kartar Singh. (Times Photo by Bill Halkett)."
