Notes
"Kathak dance is the most prominent classical dance form of North India and Pakistan and traces back its origin to the nomadic troubadours justly called kathaks, which means storytellers. The techniques of Kathak call for a highly sophisticated choreographic language consisting of mudras (codified hand gestures), the movement of feet, the facial expressions and the positions of the body. The most striking element in a Kathak show is the footwork as well as the pirouettes that impress with their speed and lead to momentarily frozen poses resembling a classic Indian statue." -Kabir Cultural Centre "The founder, Anjani Ambegaokaris the first artist of Indian heritage to receive the National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowments of Art, USA in 2004. Her choreography includes traditional full-length dance dramas like Amrapali - Raj Nartaki on the one hand and innovations such as Art of Basketabll-Kathak style and World Music and Kathak Rhythms on the other." -Kabir Cultural Centre "Anjani Ambegaokar came to the United States in 1967 from her native India and has since become the most well known dancer, choreographer, and educator of Kathak in the nation. Kathak, a popular but very complex form of North Indian dance with a 4,000-year history, tells stories of ancient mythology incorporating fast tempo barefoot rhythms with ankle bells and distinctive, graceful hand gestures and facial expressions. Anjani began her training in Kathak dance over fifty years ago, studying with the great master teacher Guru Pandit Sundarlaljee Gangani in India. She also holds an M.A. degree in Kathak dance from the M.S. University of Baroda, India." -https://www.arts.gov/honors/heritage/anjani-ambegaokar. "The principal dancer, Amrapali Ambegaokar, besides being an exceptional Kathak exponent, has incorporated classical Kathak dance, Flamenco, and modern dance techniques in Cirque du Soleil's Dralion to play the Principal Character/Dancer "Oceane": goddess of water. She has acted in Hollywood and Bollywood films and made guest appearances on The Today Show, NY, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and several others." -Kabir Cultural Centre "Amrapali Ambegaokar is an International Master of Kathak (North Indian Classical Dance known for its rich acting training as well as its fast pure dance technique). Amrapali performed as a guest on season 5 of Fox's So You Think You Can Dance and also won the coveted Solo Silver Medal in the International hit show NBC's Superstars of Dance produced by Mastermind Producer and Director Nigel Lythgoe with a solo appearance on NBC's Today Show." -https://www.officialamrapali.com/.
