Description
Newspaper clipping titled, "Sikhs outraged by-immigration plan·that asks Singhs, Kaurs to change names" highlighting the outrage caused within the Sikh community after a federal policy asked immigrants to Canada with the surnames Singh or Kaur- two of the most common in India - to change them to avoid applicant mix-ups. The surnames Singh and Kaur, males and females, respectively, have been in use among Sikhs worldwide for over 300 years, to symbolize the abolition of class and caste inequalities in Indian society. Thus, many Sikhs in Canada view the policy as 'degrading' and disrespectful towards the Sikhs and think it should be repealed immediately. The article, written by Jack Keating, was published in The Province on 26th July, 2007.
