Doman Family fonds

Fonds/Collection, 2023_14

Harbanse “Herb” Singh Doman was born on Vancouver island on April 9th, 1932. When Herb’s father, Attar Doman, passed away in 1944, the responsibility fell upon Herb to provide for the family. At the age of 16, Herb started a business transporting lumber in a single hauling truck. With the help of his brothers Gurdial and Didar, Herb’s business expanded, eventually branching out from transport into logging, sawmilling, and building supplies retail. From these humble beginnings, Doman Industries Limited would flourish into one of British Columbia’s most successful and historically important forest products companies, conducting operations in British Columbia, Alberta, the Yukon, and eleven states in the western United States. This collection of photographs, corporate documents, and correspondences showcases the life of Herb Doman from both a business and a personal perspective. These records provide a window into the sawmills, logging camps, storefronts and trade shows overseen by Doman Industries, as well as the parties, galas, social gatherings and community events where Herb and his family rubbed elbows with the luminaries of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. The items in this collection are provided to SACDA by the BC Forest Discovery Centre.
