Fraser Mills collection

Fonds/Collection, 2023_27

Founded in 1889 by Frank Ross and James MacLaren, the MacLaren Ross Lumber Company began production in 1890. However, due to financial difficulties and an economic depression, the mill was closed down from 1893-1903, and was then bought out by new investors who went on to call it the Fraser River Saw Mills. The mill was again bought by another agency, and in 1910 the company was reorganized and became part of a larger group of mills that was then called the Canadian Western Lumber Company Limited. It was around this time that the area and town around the mills was named Fraser Mills. For years the timber/lumber industries were financially prosperous and the sawmill companies employed workers of various backgrounds including those of European, Chinese, Japanese, and South Asian descent. In 1913, Fraser Mills became its own municipality, separate from the city of Coquitlam. Canadian Western Lumber Company Limited passed through several hands over the years, first being acquired in 1954 by Crown Zellerbach Canada Limited, Fletcher Challenge Limited of New Zealand in 1983, and in 2000, it was Norske Skog who bought a majority interest in Fletcher Challenge Canada Limited and became Norske Skog Canada Limited. In 1971, the Fraser Mills municipality rejoined Coquitlam, and after over 115 years of operation, in 2005, Fraser Mills sawmill closed down. This collection includes pages from the Canadian Western Lumber Company Ltd accident report book. The physical book can be viewed at the City of Coquitlam Archives, and is part of the Coquitlam Heritage Society collection. The reference number is C4-S2-SS2-F02, Box 17. https://searcharchives.coquitlam.ca/index.php/canadian-western-lumber-company-fonds
