The South Asian (re)Migration from Africa collection documents the transnational migration histories of South Asian Canadian families who journeyed from East Africa to British Columbia, during the 20th century. The project was initiated in 2022 by the South Asian Studies Institute (SASI) and supported by the Community Health and Social Innovation Hub (CHASI) at the University of the Fraser Valley. The project was led by Dr. Sarah Beaulieu, a conflict anthropologist at the University of the Fraser Valley. The research focused on four family narratives: Abdul Aleem; Fidah and Razia Haque; Munawar Sabir; and Mohinder Singh. These individuals reflect a broader historical movement in which families, originally from India, migrated to East Africa during British colonial rule and subsequently relocated to Canada, often via the United Kingdom. The collection comprises oral history interviews and associated research materials that trace these complex migration trajectories. The materials in this collection highlight the enduring impacts of colonialism, the challenges of displacement, and the resilience demonstrated by South Asian migrants who resettled in British Columbia.
