The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority operates the principal port in Western Canada, and was formed from the 2008 amalgamation of the Vancouver Port Authority, the Fraser River Port Authority, and the North Fraser Port Authority. It was first formed as the Vancouver Harbour Commission in 1913, and its jurisdiction included Burrard Inlet, with the north arm and Port Moody, False Creek and English Bay and all other tidal waters lying east of a line drawn from the Point Atkinson Lighthouse southerly to the most westerly point of Point Grey. In 1983, the port was established as the Vancouver Port Corporation under the Canada Ports Corporation Act. As a local port corporation, the VPC was autonomous and financial independent, but retained some ties to the Canada Ports Corporation. In 1998 the Canada Marine Act designated the Vancouver Port Corporation as the Vancouver Port Authority. In 2008 the Vancouver Port Authority amalgamated with the Fraser River Port Authority and the North Fraser Port Authority to form the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is a non-shareholder, financially self-sufficient corporation, governed by a board of directors representing government and industry. The port jurisdiction extends from Point Roberts at the Canada/U.S. border through Burrard Inlet to Port Moody and Indian Arm, and from the mouth of the Fraser River, eastward to the Fraser Valley, north along the Pitt River to Pitt Lake, and includes the north and middle arms of the Fraser River. The port is responsible for the operation and development of the assets of the combined former Fraser River Port Authority, North Fraser Port Authority and Vancouver Port Authority, including deep sea terminals and freshwater facilities. The port operates across five business sectors, including automobiles, breakbulk, bulk, container and cruise. The port is also responsible for the environmental management of all port operations and the mitigation of environmental impacts related to the development and expansion proposals. The port markets itself as Port Metro Vancouver, but the company's legal name remains Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. The Register of Seamen Shipped Ledger Collection consists of 47 volumes documenting the seamen who shipped out of the Port of Vancouver. The collection dates from 1898 to 1967 and is a unique record of merchant marine history. These large, hand-written ledgers include the name of the ship, a list of the crew and their position on the ship, wages earned, and a home address.
