Wilmer Gold collection

Fonds/Collection, 2023_06

Wilmer Gold was born in 1893 in Victoria, BC. In 1934, Gold moved from Alberta to the town of Youbou on the shores of Lake Cowichan, where he began documenting the lumber trade in British Columbia through the medium of black-and-white photography. During the early 20th century, many South Asian Canadians found employment in the sawmills and logging camps of Vancouver Island, and their labour and the communities they created feature prominently in his work. Through Wilmer Gold’s lens, explore labour organization, sporting events, and community celebrations among the South Asian diaspora in and around Lake Cowichan, Sahtlam, Hillcrest and Youbou. The photos in this collection, taken between 1934 and 1956, are selected excerpts from the larger Wilmer Gold Photo collection, developed by Julia Margaret Gold and provided to the Kaatza Station Museum by the United Steelworkers of America Local 1-1937.
